1.) How do you think the season will go this year?
Kurr responds on a positive outlook, “I’m very pleased with the practices to date, we have two eighth graders with a lot of experience, Carly Duff and Alyssa Bettencourt. We hope to get Kim Fish off a medical to be able to be eligible. We have got some promising seventh graders who have played a lot of basketball, Kiarra Dorman and Adeline Ford. So it will be up to that group of people, to bring the younger seventh graders that are on the team up to speed. If they can be the leaders than the younger seventh graders will be willing to follow.
2.) How are the teams the middle school girls will play this year?
“The girls will face a very difficult schedule. Based on our results from last year, the teams that will give us the toughest competition will be Charlton, Dudley, and Tantasqua. We hope to compete with the other teams on our schedule, but I would think that those three, based on last year’s results, will be the toughest to face.”
3.) What are the strengths of your individual five starters?
“We have two excellent ball handlers, named Carly Duff and Kiarra Dorman. Kiarra gives us a lot of scoring; she is able to put the ball in the basket. Addy Ford has also helped in bringing the ball up the court against the pressured defense we have faced. Alyssa Bettencourt has been a solid defender, a good contributor. She had one of her better games at our loss against Tantasqua; she scored six points, and is also helping with the leadership she is bringing as an eighth grader. As I said before, we are hoping to bring the seventh grader along; Vanessa Ricci has shown some good promises as a seventh grader. She got a couple baskets the last couple games. We hope to get some contribution from the other young seventh graders.”
4.) What is the attitude of the games and practices?
“The attitude has been great. The girls are willing to learn, they know the price they have to pay to get better, they know their job is to work on the skills they have been taught to get better, so they can progress to the next level, particularly the eighth graders, Carly and Alyssa and Kim Fish if she joins us. They have to be ready by working on their skills to compete at the j.v level. All the girls’ attitudes of seventh and eighth graders have been excellent, and I enjoy coaching them.”
5.) How do the girls keep up with the speed of the game?
“That’s one thing that has helped with Carly, Alyssa, Kiarra, and Addy; they played suburban basketball so they are able to slow the game down and make good decisions on the court. The other girls who don’t have the experience the others have, it’s going to take them a while, and it is up to Carly, Kiarra, Addy, and Alyssa to bring them up to speed, be very patient with them, and work on their skills.”
