I as many people who have seen the trailer for this movie have probably been enticed by the appearance of Chris Pine in what seemed to be a promising film given his stellar performance in the highly popular Star Trek Series movie revamps (Star Trek : Into Darkness as well as Star Trek : Wrath of Khan). Within the first few minutes the film establishes a strong theme of patriotism when Jack Ryan (Played by Chris Pine) awakes from a slumber to find the Twin Towers have just been attacked in the tragedy we've come to recognize as 9/11. At this point we skip ahead 18months to a point in which Jack has now enlisted in the US Army due to his drive to serve his country. However a when a RPG strikes down Jacks helicopter over Afghanistan; Which leaves Jack critically injured with a shattered back. This is the point where the directors have decided to remove all sense of realism and allowed Jack to survive, recover and oh yea become a master of unarmed combat and mixed martial arts, because whats more real than a nearly paralyzed vet becoming the next Jackie Chan?
Jack Ryan fresh from rehab is cast into the role of gathering intelligence about suspicious Russian accounts and investments within the US. For whatever reason the directors chose to make the main character a film advertised as heavily suspenseful and action packed a CIA tax and investment auditor... these are two very very different different things which should never be crossed together if you plan to generate any sort of interest in a film, can we expect a new upcoming movie from these directors called “Jake from StateFarm : Shadow Recruit” ?
However strange this beginning is, it cannot even begin to mask the terrible performance of Keira Knightley who plays both Jack's Physical Therapist and love interest throughout the “wonderful” two hours of this movie. It comes quite easily when I say many people along with myself would have been more than satisfied if the Villains had decided to kill off Keira's character just so we don’t have to muddle through her disruptive, ignorant and overly annoying disposition.
Now that I’ve addressed the protagonists of film it seems only appropriate to highlight the antagonist of the film played by Kenneth Branagh, who plays a Russian who we can never definitively identify as either a billionaire, a KGB operative, a Russian government worker or simply a business man with an extremely nasty vendetta against the US. As with any villain the casting and script of this character can make or break any movie; despite their score on the casting field, the scripting of this character leaves much to be desired. Despite the not so subtle quotations of Imagine Dragons and overall spacy scripting of this villain leaving him seem more senile than menacing; we are thrown a bone when Branagh shows and demonstrates how to use a light bulb as both a torture device as well as a lethal weapon (We are only left to wonder if this is included so we might use the lamps around us to end our suffering through this poorly scripted movie).
In my final regards to Jack Ryan : Shadow Recruit I would like to address the protagonists aid a CIA Head Operative and Recruiter played by Kevin Costner. Throughout the film Kevin will often ask Jack to “Dumb down” all information and scenarios that he offers to prevent a global crisis caused by our senile Russian antagonist. This leaves us wondering if you cannot comprehend the intel you’re being fed, should you really be the Head of the Central Intelligence Agency? The overall plot and scripting of this film leaves such major holes and “wait... what?” moments that what could have possibly been a very enjoyable, action littered film with an incredible team of actors whose talent and possibility is masked beneath this awful plot. As for Jack Ryan : Shadow Recruit we can only wish this movie would have stayed in the shadows.
