With the first game of the season only one day away, the Girls' Varsity Basketball team is looking to start the season off strong. Going into tomorrow's game against David Prouty, the team is confident in their ability to succeed since Prouty has typically been a weak opponent. The team feels prepared going into more difficult games later in the season after being successful in a scrimmage against a Division 1 team, Holy Name. This season, Tantasqua is squaring up to be Quaboag's biggest rival within the league, with Auburn and Grafton posing threats in overall play.
The team, lead by Co-Captains Brittany Herring and Olivia Corfey, hope to play an aggressive game; driving to the basket and giving the two key forwards, Herring and Lexi Paquette, opportunities to shoot from the outside. Having lost last year's key player, Jess Korzec, who played exceptionally well as the team's point guard, they are expecting pressure to be heavy on the new point guard, Kayla Klein. However, the coach, Mr. Clifford Lanier, has confidence in Klein, as she has experience playing in many of the games last year.
Coming off of last years impressive season, Coach Lanier says that he is looking “less at the record and more at the individual games” to determine the improvement of the team. The main goal of the season is to make it to the District finals again with the team rebuilding after the loss of their key player. Going into the season though, Coach Lanier has confidence in his players to play strong and play the game they know how. As with any team, the ultimate goal of the season is the make it to the State Championships, but it is clear that the 2014-2015 Quaboag Girls' Varsity Basketball team has the potential to accomplish any goals they set.
